Standards – Part 3

In this part of the standards series, you will get to know the essential standards recognized worldwide that are relevant to technical editing work.

The horizontal standard for technical documentation, ISO/IEC 82079-1 “Preparation of instructions for use - Structuring, content and presentation”, is recognized worldwide. As it is relevant to machines, DIN EN ISO 12100 “Safety of machinery - Basic concepts; general principles for design” is just as important. In this context, ANSI Z 535.1 – 6 “Product Safety Signs and Labels”, ISO 3864-1 – 3 “Graphical symbols — Safety colors and safety signs”, ISO 7000 “Graphical symbols for use on equipment – Index and overview” and DIN EN ISO 7010 “Graphical symbols -- Safety colors and safety signs -- Registered safety signs” are often used for warning messages. For medicinal products, DIN EN ISO 15223-1 “Medical devices -- Symbols to be used with medical device labels, labeling and information to be supplied” as well as DIN EN 60601-1 “Medical electrical equipment - Part 1: General requirements for basic safety and essential performance” come up first.
